Manganese Sulphate Monohydrate BP Ph Eur Grade Specifications
MnSO4,H2O

DEFINITION
Content: 99.0 per cent to 101.0 per cent (ignited substance).

CHARACTERS
Appearance: Pale pink crystalline powder, slightly hygroscopic.
Solubility: Freely soluble in water, practically insoluble in ethanol (96 per cent).

IDENTIFICATION
A. Solution S (see Tests) gives reaction of sulphates.
B. Dissolve 50 mg in 5 ml of water. Add 0.5 ml of ammonium sulphide solution. A pale pink precipitate is formed which dissolves on the addition of 1 ml of anhydrous acetic acid.
C. Loss on ignition (see Tests).

TESTS
Solution S: Dissolve 10.0 g in distilled water and dilute to 100 ml with the same solvent.
Appearance of solution: Solution S is not more opalescent than reference suspension.
Chlorides: Maximum 100 ppm.
Iron: Maximum 10 ppm, determined on solution S.
Zinc: Maximum 50 ppm.
Heavy metals: Maximum 20 ppm.
Loss on ignition: 10.0 per cent to 12.0 per cent, determined on 1.00 g at 500 ± 50C.

Manganese Sulphate BP Ph Eur
MnSO4-4H2O

DEFINITION
Manganese Sulphate is manganese (II) sulphate tetrahydrate. It contains not less than 98.0% and not more than 100.5% of MnSO4, calculated with reference to the substance ignited at 450 to 500C.

CHARACTERISTICS
Pale pink crystals or crystalline powder.
Freely soluble in water; practically insoluble in ethanol (96%).

IDENTIFICATION
A. Dissolve 0.5 g in 10 ml of water and add 1 ml of sodium sulphide solution. A pink precipitate is produced which is soluble in 6M acetic acid.
B. To 0.1 g add 2 g of lead-(IV) oxide and 5 ml of nitric acid , boil gently for a few minutes, add 100 ml of water and filter. A purple solution is produced.
C. Yields the reactions characteristic of sulphates.

TESTS
Arsenic: 4 ppm
Heavy metals: 40 ppm
Iron: 40 ppm
Zinc: 500 ppm
Chloride: 330 ppm
Loss on ignition: When ignited to constant weight at 450° to 500°, loses 31.0 to 34.0% of its weight. Use 1 g.

Manganese(2+) sulfate (1:1) monohydrate [CAS 10034-96-5]
Anhydrous 151.00 [CAS 7785-87-7]

Manganese Sulfate contains not less than 98.0 percent and not more than 102.0 percent of MnSO4·H2O.

Identification: A solution (1 in 10) responds to the tests for Manganese 191 and for Sulfate.
Loss on ignition: Ignite it at 450 to constant weight: it loses between 10.0% and 13.0% of its weight.
Substances not precipitated by ammonium sulfide: Dissolve 2.0 g in 90 mL of water, add 5 mL of ammonium hydroxide, warm the solution, and pass hydrogen sulfide through the solution for about 30 minutes. Dilute with water to 100 mL, mix, and allow the precipitate to settle. Decant the supernatant through a filter, transfer 50 mL of the clear filtrate to a tarred dish, evaporate to dryness, and ignite, gently at first and finally at 800 ± 25 : the weight of the residue does not exceed 5 mg (0.5%).

A jackal woke up early in the morning and went in to the plains. He looked at his long shadow in the rising morning sun and said to himself, "I must have a camel for my meal today".

He kept moving around till noon and it was getting hot and the jackal was tired. He was also hungry and thirsty. He looked at his small shadow in the mid-day sun. He murmered, "I was only joking about the camel, a mouse will do".
